"SECOND LIFE (DEFTERI ZOE)"
It is often said that one cannot tell the difference between poetry and Eleftheria Arvanitaki, since some of the greatest Greek poems have been part of her very own repertoire.
When poetry is paired with beautiful music and a unique voice combines the East and the West, then it definitely gains a SECOND LIFE.
Eleftheria Arvanitaki has interpreted poetry in a unique way.
Eleftheria Arvanitaki started her personal career in music singing the work of the poet Yorgos Ioannou for the essential album “Kentro Dierhomenon” with the musical work of Nikos Mamagkakis, while in 1987 she featured in Nikos Xidakis’ album “Konta sti doxa mia stigmi” interpreting Napoleon Lapathiotis’ poem “Erotiko”- she would sing Lapathiotis’ works later on for her album “Ola sto fos”, i.e. the song “San aeraki” with the music of Manolis Pappos. In 1994 she worked with the contemporary poet Michalis Ganas to produce the album “Ta kormia kai ta machairia” with the music of the American-Armenian composer Ara Dinkjian. In 1996 Eleftheria Arvanitaki released her magical album “Tragoudia gia tous mines” in which the composer Dimitris Papadimitriou scores the poetry of Sappho, Maria Polydouri, Kostas Kariotakis, the Nobel Awared poet Odysseas Elytis, Michalis Ganas along with couplets of our folk tradition, thus being endowed with another very important and successful asset of her repertoire, containing songs like “Parapono”, “Pame xana sta thaumata”, “San tin agapi tin krifi” and “Tou pothou t’agrimi”.
Eleftheria Arvanitaki released her second based on poetry album in 2008, entitled “Grigora I ora perase” with music written by Nikos Xydakis on works of Sappho renditioned by Odysseas Elytis and K.X. Myris, but also works of Costas Cariotakis and Dionysis Kapsalis, thus confirming her love of poetry and her amazing performing ability.
The project entitled “Defteri Zoe” premiered in June 2016 in Athens in the context of the “Metamorphosis” festival of the Stavros Niarhos Cultural Centre Foundation and was attended by 20,000 people. It was presented again in the mythical island of Delos in August 2016, and is to be presented again in Paphos, Cyprus on the 4th of August.
